Homemade Christmas Gifts Reveal #3: Family Shape Puzzle

Step One: Use What You Have.
Start with a store bought puzzle.
I used this version from Melissa and Doug for both puzzles.
I used one that I already had in the house for my own daughter
and one that I got from Freecycle to re-make for my Sister In Law's new baby.

Step Two: Follow the Lines.
Trace Family Photos to glue into the holes.

Step Three: Put On a Happy Face.
Here is the puzzle with photos glued into the holes.
Cover with protective coating of clear Mod Podge when the glue is dry.

Step Four: Get Artsy.
To Jazz it Up...I took off the handles and added scrapbooking paper
to each shape andcoated these with a layer of Modge Podge as well.

Here is my adorable sister in law opening hers on Christmas day!
How cute would this be for baby's first Christmas
(or as a first birthday present... or even for a shower gift?!)

Happy Re-cycled Crafting!

I'm so impressed with all of your homemade gifts. Especially the Pixie Hollow. I'll have to remember these next year.

This is terrific! I am going to work on this for Jack's first birthday next May.

In the kindergarten at my school the teacher makes a book each year with the kids' pictures. Between each page she puts a piece of construction paper with a shape cut out over the face. The kids have to name the classmate with just the little shape. Throughout the year she unbinds the book and moves the pages around so they don't only guess based on the shape.

I am always on the lookout for wonderfully creative and personalized gifts and this more than fits the bill! I am going to feature this on my sunday links post (if you don't mind and submit this also to the Crafty Crow).

Hi!
I'm finally getting around to making this for my friend's daughters first bday. So I have the pictures in and went to take the handles off of the puzzle pieces so I could cover them in paper and they don't come off...cheap puzzle I guess. Sooooo any other ideas on what I could do to the top and/or how I can put paper on around the handles? I thought about paint but I don't think that will look as good. Help! =) Thanks!

Love this idea! My son is adopted and I made a welcome scrapbook for him. I'm now preparing to go through the adoption process again. This idea is perfect for the next child since I don't want to do the same thing twice.

Re: your politic comments. How ya like Obomanation now???? No worries it looks like everyone is waking up now and he will not be re-elected next round. Hopefully we get a better pres next round and one that wants our country to succeed not fail. It would be nice if we get one with out a racist wife this time around most of all one who is proud of our country and not such a Disappointment herself.

@ Tamika- Wow! You have very strong opinions of our President and the First Lady. I'm still a strong supporter of the administration and think they were left with the unfortunate task of cleaning up a lot of messes left behind by the failures of the previous Bush administration.

The great thing about our beautiful country is that we are all entitled to our own opinions and to express them freely!! We have the privilege to agree to disagree. : )
A lot of people on this planet are not so fortunate.

Fondly,
MaryLea
