The Frog Princess and I have been busy in the kitchen making valentines for her kindergarten class. We made these last year for her preschool and she wants to make it an annual tradition. We saved our broken bits of crayons, easy to do with Mini-Saurus coloring in the house these days. Peeled them all carefully, broke them into smaller pieces. Then we baked them in the oven at 250 for about 15 minutes in our Wilton mini heart pan. Once they are melted we put the hot pan out on our deck in the snow to cool. Each child will get one attached to circle of paper with a little Earth drawn by the Frog Princess.

OMG! You just saved me! I have a whole coffee can full of broken crayon bits and I kept saving them while at the same time thinking I should just toss them, but then I would feel guilty for doing that--so I have just kept them. Now I finally know what to do with them! What a very cool idea--you always have cool ideas though. I just want to know when you are going on your house to house arts and craft tour ;-) I would like to be first please!
I hope to do that soon--after the craziness of the move dies down.

Great Valentine's Day activity! Another activity that you can participate in that will also help the environment is to send Valentine's cards to Disney and ask them to use green cleaning products! Here is a site to learn more and get involved.

I can't do it since I can't find those molds here. But I am pretty sure that I will find something else.
Julie, You can always do this with a regular muffin pan if you don't have the shape ones. Or you can try it with metal cookie cutters in the sun...or you can melt the wax carefully in your oven in a soup can and then pour it into candy molds, foil lined bottles/empty yogurt containers, or something similar!! I've been checking out all of your projects since I have three little ones myself. This would be perfect for my DD's K class this year too! LOVE IT!! I'm always throwing away broken crayons, but now will keep a special baggy for them. ;)

Love this! We made these this year and tehy are super easy to make and just adorable. The kids had fun helping with peeling the crayons. Tip: If you're having a tough time getting the crayons out of the pan put the pan in the freezer for a few minutes and then they should pop right out.

So we just made these and I'm terrified at how I will get them out of the pan... help?
@ Laura -- put the pan in the freezer then they'll pop right out. It works a lot better if you spray the pan first with non-stick cooking spray!
