Children and Rainbows go together like Peas and Carrots.
Why not make your own colored rice to explore a RAINBOW sensory box?
The girls and I continued our Color Wheel themed Rainbow Camp Week with this fun project.
Why not make your own colored rice to explore a RAINBOW sensory box?
The girls and I continued our Color Wheel themed Rainbow Camp Week with this fun project.
We used food coloring to dye white rice for a new Rainbow Activity Box.
I wanted to use rubbing alcohol to "set" the food coloring color
with the rice (the same way I dyed the noodles for our sun catcher rainbows)
But, I was running low on rubbing alcohol,
so I substituted with Purelle (alcohol-based hand sanitizer)
It worked perfectly!
4-5 pumps per sandwich bag and 4-5 drops of food coloring.
(I re-used the bags I dyed the noodles in)
I think it actually dried a lot faster!
I found this great idea at the Forester Clan Blog.
They did a much more sophisticated color palette with their rice.
We stuck with our basic 6 colors,
Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet.
my girls aren't big fans of Indigo (navy blue...no thanks)
So pretty before we mixed it all together...
NOTE: We let it finish drying in the sunshine and fresh air to get rid of the
alcohol smell - once it was dry there wasn't any smell except for the rice smell.

Wow, I love this! I've been wanting to do it with the pasta, but now I will have to try both! Thanks for sharing this!

Looks like fun! Wish there were some pinl lovers over here to try it with :( thanks for stopping by the blog yesterday for my big day! Hope you come back soon:)
Your rice looks beautiful, and I love the idea of substituting purell for rubbing alcohol, brilliant improvising with the materials you have on hand!
The rice looks beautiful and your colors are very vibrant! I bet the girls had a great time playing with it. :-)
Hey great idea! Love this and am looking forward to trying it out with my daughter.
I just bought a big bag of rice to do this! Fun!
Your children are so lucky to have such a creative, hands-on, fun mummy. Just love your projects! Can you come over and do some with my kids? ;)
I love all your ideas!
I've had a lovely morning browsing your blog. I love your ideas and the creativity you instill in your children. I have three year old who loves anything creative so I'm having a blast with him. We'll definitely have to try this rice idea. We've dyed pasta for counting/sorting/stringing but I this looks fun. Thanks for all your great ideas.
I love your rainbow sensory box & your rainbow party. Lots of great ideas here. I’ve got a MckLinky party called Tot Tuesdays which started on Tuesday. I hope you'll stop by & share some of your ideas: http://delicious-ambiguity-nennyk.blogspot.com/2010/03/first-ever-tot-tuesdays-mcklinky-party.html
Cheers, Jenn
I mentioned your rainbow rice idea on my blog and gave a link over to your blog. Maybe you'll see some new faces from the Down syndrome community :-)
I am having so much fun exploring your blog. I ran a home daycare for 11 years and I used many of the same ideas you have posted. Including the rice box here. It's also very good for adults to use if they have to deal with anxiety issues. Did you know that pink and green are the two colors of the heart chakra? Seems to fit you perfectly.
i just recently found your blog & LOVE this activity... my 2 year old is fascinated! he's working on his fine motor skills & telling me all his colors! I LOVE IT!! thanks soo much for sharing this great idea!!
lol! Love the princess party!
Absolutely love this! Just did it and blogged about it! Thanks!

Thanks!!!
My 2yo LOVES this! We use a touch of white vinegar and food colouring to colour ours. Works great. Also love doing it with pasta.
Did this with my son last week and it turned out great. I credited you on my blog and linked to this page. You have nicer colours. My food dye was dubious, i might have to shop around. Thanks for the insipration
This looks easy to replicate, thanks! I found your blog through pinterest and am now following.
That rice is ABSOLUTELY beautiful! Oh wow... I love your blog!
I tried doing this today. It was fun and so easy to do. I used it to fill an empty glass container and used it for decoration. I think I will do more tomorrow. I will post it on my blog and link you. Thanks for the inspiration. Your ideas are great.
