Newest Member of Our Family: Tiny The Snail

The Frog Princess has a thing for snails.
They hold a special place in her heart.

After spending time
with our THREE pet snails
(two aquatic snails,
one golden, one black
in our fish tank)

and now...
our backyard snail named Tiny,
I have to admit I really like them too!

The girls stayed at Grammy and Grandpa's house
last weekend while the hubby and I celebrated
our 11th Wedding Anniversary
(by installing two SolaTubes -
yes we're green home improvement nerds)

The Frog Princess was playing
in the backyard
and found Tiny hanging out in the garden.

She has been begging me
for a land snail.

So....
The Frog Princess and her Grammy
did some research online
and found a website from a teacher
who keeps snails in her classroom.
(If I can find her site again, I'll add a link.)

She had lots of good advice like
use a plastic shoe box instead of cardboard
(because the snails can eat through the paper and escape)

They eat lettuce, Hosta Leaves,
cornmeal mixed with oatmeal...

They need a calcium source to build up their shells,
I have some in a jar from the pet store
but you can use ground up egg shells
or ground up snail shells (yikes!! a bit cannibalistic)

She also said to use pantyhose
(I knew my bag of hose I've been saving to recycle would come in handy)
or mesh as the lid for ventilation.

It needs to be moist but
not TOO humid.
Tiny the snail likes to climb the ceiling.
The slime trails he leaves are really cool.

We use a mister to mist his tank with water
to keep the moss moist and refill his water dish
(a repurposed plastic bottle cap)

Smitten.

Awww... Tiny is adorable! We have 2 toads and a tree frog! Daddy researched on line as well. Toadie has been with us for over a year! Last weekend Daddy was mowing and came across a tiny snake, green, little and dis-gusting! I told him NO snakes in my house!

panty hose alway work great for tree frog covers! :)

we had a few snails as pets a few years ago just keep everything moist!

congrats on her snail Tiny is cute!

if you want a really neat art project: place a drop of food coloring on paper. place the snail on top and you'll have snail trails art work we did this a few times all snails lived over a year later so it doesn't harm them. and my LO's loved it!!!

Ah! Snails are MOST excellent, I had some 'pet' snails when I was wee also... however I didn't actually do any research, or think much about it at all obviously, because I put them in an old aquarium with various leaves & sticks to play with & came back the next day to the suprising sight of an aquarium filled fill leaves & sticks but no snails....

That's right. I had no lid. But, being the blonde child that I was, I was terribley perplexed at the time.... ;)

That is pretty cool. I don't think I want a snail but I think they are neat.

Glad Tiny is happy. I love the quote in your header and have used it in one of my Thoughts for Thursday. I've christened my apron this week. I used it to cook the Little Buttons birthday tea. Still kept it looking nice and pretty and felt quite glam while wearing it. Thanks for visiting. I love your eye spy bottles and am enjoying popping into your blog.

Kind regards,

Lisa.

I love this post, the photo of your little girl admiring the snail is precious. There is an adorable book called, In the Garden...? I think that's the name.
Any-who, it is darling, I'm sure she would love it. I'll try and fine the exact title for you.
PEACE
J
