My first grader came home with a homework assignment to
create a picture with fall leaves.
Inspired by the book Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert.
We took a stroll around the neighborhood to collect
our collage materials (assorted leaves, bark, twigs)
First, she made a Bird/ Leaf Man:
I made an underwater fish scene
(Hey, mom wanted to play too!).
Then, she decided to make a tree.
(logical idea when you're working with leaves and bark!)
She started by tearing green paper for a ground line,
glued it onto a blue sheet of paper,
and added a piece of real bark as a trunk.
A variety of leaves filled the top,
but it needed something more....
Then the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree
on our fridge inspired her to grab mom's stash of sharpies
and make this:
What kind of art can your kids make with some
natural materials?

I love your fish scene! You're very creative. :)
What a fun craft! We are headed to my folk's in the mid-west next weekend and they have plenty of trees and nature to use. Thanks for sharing!
These are so beautiful, I love the underwater seascape and the different take on making a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Tree!
BTW, wanted to let you know I'm in the mailbag for the Nov issue of Family Fun. I got the idea to send in a picture after seeing your daughter and her project. Thanks for giving me the push to go from thinking about sending in a picture to actually doing it. When ER saw her picture she actually squealed with delight.
OMG I haven't read that bok in years. I remember reading it a ton in my el ed program. I need to get that book for my kiddos.
What a fun idea. I have some leaves we just collected. We should try making some pictures with them.
