Science At Home: Anti-Gravity Brooms

(My sweet Frog Princess model is in her PJs
since she's battling Swine Flu this weekend)

My in-laws called this weekend to let us know
you can stand up a broom
in your house right now
because there is something wacky
with the Earth's gravity.
(they've had one standing in their kitchen for a week!
can you tell they don't have small kids around anymore?)

I don't know how long this phenomenon will last,
or what is causing it...

UPDATE:
On the day of the equinox, the Day Arc of the sun is 0 degrees.
The exact date and time of the September equinox is September 22, 2009 at 21:18, or 9:18 pm.
While no exact date is available for the end of the Autumn Equinox,
the effects of the equinox can still be enjoyed now.
(article from the St. Louis Parenting Teens Examiner)

But....
it is TOO COOL for School!

Perfect for (mini) witches and warlocks out there!

Or just freak out your kids/spouse
and tell them you've learned
a new magic trick.

Hey teachers... this might be
fun to try at school this week!!

Pink and Green Mama Note:
hmmm... I'm not sure why I'm getting so many
comments about folks who can't get it to work.
It's easier with a straight broom than an angled one.
No, I don't think you can use a push broom.
No, it's not a prank.
I posted this on Facebook Yesterday and got a dozen
responses from people who could get it to work,
one friend had to use her kid's broom instead but
DID get it to work.

Use a light touch,
and be patient.
No breezes, make sure your windows are closed.

Please let me know if you DO get it to work.

Wow! Is this an April's fool joke because I am really gullible? Do you have to have a certain broom? I tried it and it didn't work, but my broom bristles aren't exactly straight anymore.

LOL! I'm pretty gullible too... I can't get it to work with out using invisi-string.

Is this a prank? Doesn't work for us. Must be just where you live or it's a joke?

aww man, it doesn't work for me either!

IT WORKED FOR ME! Not at first...I tried different places in my kitchen and I totally gasped and stepped back when it did work! It's still standing right now!

I think I remember something about this when I was younger. Well, I remember a time during the year when an egg will stand up on its own. It has something to do with the solstice or whatever is happening this time of year. (I know time change weekend is coming up.) Something to do with where the earth is in its revolution around the sun.

I have a broom standing in my kitchen right now...so cool!

That is very cool! It took me about 2 minutes and trying different spots but my anngle broom has been standing for about 10 minutes. I think we're going to try seeing how long it will stand up.

This has the same charm as the "salt shaker standing on its edge" trick!

I remember the first time my cousin showed it to me...and I still love impressing kids with it today!

I can't wait to try this! I've got my fingers crossed that it will work... :)

My dad and I used to stand eggs on the small end during this crazy gravity time every year. It was a tradition. I love that you can do it with a broom too! Although, I honestly won't try it this year... I DO have a little one in the house. Perhaps next year. ;)

Sorry your little one is sick! This really is too cool of a 'trick', thanks for sharing!

that's so funny because there is a shop keeper in Canada who was on the NEWS because her broom did that. Everyone thought there was something special and spooky about her shop. Now I see it is possible with other people as well!
Haha too cool!

Sorry, not Canada, but here's the story I saw:

I got it to work and I did freak out the spouse when I called him into the room. We used the straw broom we used to leap over during our handfasting ceremony

It worked for us!!!

I'll have to give this a try and let you know. :)

It does look pretty freaky though, doesn't it? LOL

worked for me in Utah .... with an angled broom no less!

This is awesome and it totally worked for me!

Actually, you can stand a broom up on end or an egg or anything any day. You just have to find the center of gravity. It doesn't have to be on the equinox so go ahead and give it a try any day - just be patient. It's fun!

Shelly said...

I have an angled broom that I've had for years and my 4 yr old did it in less than 2 minutes.

IndyMichele said...

I just got mine to work, course then if fell over and scared the poo out of me :)

Sheryl said...

It worked!

Regina said...

Wow! That is really awesome, I love the photos and can't wait to try it here.

Franny Z said...

It worked for me! I even took a photo for proof. I found it was really dependent on the bristles being situated just so and then trying to balance the handle. Thanks for the fun trick!

Jess said...

It is neat, and just as Jennifer said, this will work anytime. There's no errant gravitational pulls nor magnetic fields, just simple balancing. :)

It worked for me...angled broom and all!

I'm totally impressed!!!! it's standing in my kitchen right now!!!
