My hubby came up with this little artsy experiment
(I think he did it as a kid back in the stone age.)
He showed the girls how you can
separate the mixed colors
from a colored marker.
First, collect some markers in secondary colors:
Orange, Green, Purple
(not permanent - we tried, they don't work)
Note: Color Mixing 101
Secondary Colors = Orange, Green, and Purple
They are made by combining 2 Primary Colors
= Red + Yellow, Blue + Yellow, Blue + Red
Draw a small circle (diameter of a penny)
on your paper towel,
then drop a bit of clean water in the center
Watch it "star burst"
the colors will separate as it spreads.
(Do you see the purple that leached out of the blue?)
Ask your kid why they think there would be a color added to a
"primary" colored marker?
Later we tried other colors too like
Brown, Black, Pink, Blue, etc...
The girls loved it.

My (7yo) nephew was just telling me about how you could do this - very fun to see photos!
I can't wait to try this! I love the going backwards idea - starting with the secondary and going back to the primary. Kind of like color detective work!
We tried this today - such a cool thing to do with just a few minutes! Brown and black are our favourites. Thanks for sharing the idea (I love your blog by the way).
we've gotta try this... very cool!
We found this out quite by accident. I was cleaning our markers with toilet paper - just wiping off around the tip, so we wouldn't get color on our fingers, and when I dropped the TP in the toilet, the color bursts happened.
Needless to say, we had fun in the bathroom that day. LOL
Please enlighten me! I tried this today with my LO and it didn't work. We got the beautiful blooms of color and she was thrilled, but our secondary colors DID NOT separate! I was so disappointed. I used Crayola markers. Any ideas?

What a quick and easy craft where you get to use your thinking skills.
We are going to do this one for sure! Thanks for sharing it!
Great teaching for color combination for kids.
