Old School Crafting: Weaving Ribbon Barrettes

My mom recently discovered my old stash of ribbon barrettes
she wove for me when I was a little girl.

The Frog Princess claimed them immediately and has been wearing them to school all winter.

I still remember getting them around this time of year,
I had a pink and burgundy set I wore for Valentine's day
and a pale pink and blue set that were my favorites!

All of you mommies that were children and teens of the 80s
will remember this blast from the past!

I had already picked up a stash of barrettes
and skinny ribbon to make some when this month's
Family Fun magazine arrived with directions! Are you kidding me?!
psst...I swear their editors have a secretcamera planted in my craft room!

You will need one yard of each color (2 colors per barrette) and a split-style barrette.

I got the traditional straight-style barrettes and some wavy-style barrettes to mix it up a bit!

My girls love them and I have a new project to keep my hands busy at night!

Happy Crafting!

Yes! Yes! Yes!!!! I SO remember these! My aunt made these as well as the painted barrettes... remember those? She had a lovely little business going. She got "fancy" with the ribbon barrettes by stringing a few beads on the ends. They were so cool. I used to love to visit her because she would always give me some to take home!

When I saw these in Family Fun, it was an instant flashback! I loved these. I tore out the pic so I could remember to make some for Abby.

Yours are so cute!

I just found 1 of my old ones, it was pink & white w/ some beads on it. You are kinder then me though, I put it up high so my girls couldn't get to it, lol.

I have tons of that ribbon from my scrapbook stash though, I definitely have to make some. Thanks for the directions. I haven't read my newest issue of Family Fun yet.

I saw these too in Family Fun. I made them all the time when I was little. Add a few pony beads and your set.

I had these, my mom would put little sparkly beads on the end. In college they showed them on "I love the 80's," and my friend ran back to her bedroom and came back sporting them. She wore them to work the next day! :)

Aww....you brought back memories! I had a pink and purple set of these when I was a kid. I thought they were so glamorous.

We're excited here to do that craft, too. I used to love my barrettes, but none survived to this day. No matter, we can make a slew of 'em ourselves. Remember the ones with little flowers or beads? We're excited to try out that, too! :)

You are killing me with this. Just when I let go of the eighties, I visit Justice for some seriously splattered neon paint jeans and now the barrettes! Whoa! Anyone interested in rocking a Limited V-neck sweater backwards? That's how they are meant to be worn. Excuse me while I go listen to a little Erasure.

Hi there MaryLea,

I just wanted to let you know I made these barrettes and then blogged about them. I love these and they're fun to make. Thank you so much for sharing! I keep coming back to see what you have new! Next on my list are the Valentine's felt things!

This was my absolute favorite accesory when I went to Catholic school in the early 1980's. It was the only way I could show my individuality! Thank You for showing them.

Sadly the links don't work anymore. They seem pretty basic but I've never seen these myself so I wanted to make sure I would do them right.
