Easy Kool-Aid Play Dough Recipe

This is our new favorite homemade play dough recipe.
Smells fruity and the colors are so bright and vibrant!

RECIPE:
* 1 Cup of Flour
* 1/4 Cup of Salt
* 1-2 Small Package(s) of Kool Aid (un-sweetened)
Color will be brighter with two packages!
1 Cup of Boiling Water

1 1/2 teaspoons. of Oil
(NOTE: you may want to use less and add as necessary- sometimes it gets too greasy)

Mix the dry ingredients.
Then, Add Oil and Boiling Water
Stir well then, knead on a piece of waxed paper on the counter
(it will be hot for a couple of minutes)

You will need to do this  recipe for each color.
So to do this batch,  I mixed up the recipe 5 times,
one batch for each color.

Store in the fridge in a container.

Did you know?

Playing with Dough builds small muscles in hands and fingers --
it is great for fine motor development. Have fun!

I love playdough, nearly as mush as the kids too. Thanks for sharing this. :-)

I have a quick question about this...when you use kool aid does the color get on your hands (or your kid hands?). I'd love to try this...I'm just curious about clean up!!!

Love your site!!!

The colors are AMAZING! We did homemade playdoh with food coloring and it took FOREVER and LOTS of color to get any bright colors out of it

Kristi,

I haven't had any problems with much hand staining -- it's MUCH better than when we make play dough with food coloring. This recipe, the way it is can be a bit greasy so I am going to try cutting back the vegetable oil a bit on our next batch!

I always play with dough on safe surfaces like the kid's art table or on our vinyl tablecloth that is just for arts and crafts NOT on the granite kitchen counters or my wood table (just in case!)

LJ. Kool-aid is a Powdered kid's drink mix available here in the states....I don't know if it is available in Australia . Let me know if you find it or an Australian equivalent!

Love this recipe. This looks much better than the one I have!

Yes, I made this batch with sugar free kool aid
I don't know if sugar would change the outcome of the recipe.

Hi -
Okay, so we just made 5 batches of this. The yellow is VERY pale. Next time I would use 2 or 3 yellow packets to get a more vibrant color. FYI.
We also used more flour when kneading but I think it's because we still used too much oil (2 - 2 1/2 TBSP).
The kids are having so much fun. I got out all of our cookie cutters to help jump start some creativity.
The older kids don't need them as much as the younger ones do.

Thank you for the wonderful suggestion. The singing in the kitchen right now is saying it all!

Made this today! It was fabulous and I love that it doesn't have cream of tartar bc I didn't have any! Thanks so much for posting! My daughter loved our cherry lemon scented play dough!

Haven't added the oil yet, and it's really soupy. Does it take a while to set up like a hard dough?

pink and green mama MaryLea said...

If it's really soupy you may have too much liquid and don't use as much oil. You can always add more flour to soak up some. We've had mostly good results but every once in a while we have a batch go wonky and I'm not sure why!

About how much does one batch make?!

pink and green mama MaryLea said...

I've never actually measured a batch but I would say it's about cups worth of dough - similar to two cans of regular play dough per color batch.

What flavor is the green? I couldn't find it.

The green was lemon lime!
