Nature and Art: Leaf Pictures

"C"s Fox/Cat in the Snowy Woods

Our family recently vacationed in Texas  to visit grandparents.
While we spent 9 days enjoying sunny afternoons, local sights,
and their lovely warm pool, we also did some crafting!

We found this kit at the local Hobby Lobby
(my first time visiting one!)

that comes with the nature scene backgrounds,
page upon page of perforated two-sided leaf photos, and a glue stick.

The intention is to create "nature" pictures with fake leaves. : )
This is an activity we enjoy every fall with REAL leaves
from our backyard and walks around the neighborhood.

But, this kit is a nice, mess-free, alternative if you find yourselves
on an airplane or traveling to see family where you don't have the assortment
of leaves that we do.

It was quiet, kept both girls engaged for a solid 45 minutes
and was suitable for both of my girls,
ages 3 and 7 years.

"E"s Butterfly

We really enjoyed the  "nature scene" backgrounds.

I think this would be  fun to do at home  with photos torn out of magazines and real leaves
Think: National Geographic, Vacation magazines, Gardening Catalogs, etc.

"E"s Luna Moth

"E"s Snail (of course)

What an interesting kit. At first I thought you were using real leaves, but the acorn gave it away. I like that the background is provided and they can concentrate on the foreground.

Those are beautiful! I especially liked the star fish.

I like your ideas for turning this into a DIY craft, but those background sure are cool.

My heart sank a little seeing a dolphin on the beach, but I'm sure your daughter didn't make the tragic connection. =(

Tom,

Funny that you saw that too -- my 3 year old said when she made it that the "dolphin (was) jumping back into the water and don't worry mama it's not in any oil."

Love this project! It reminded me of 2 of my favorite leaf books that follow this concept of making pictures from leaves. You might want to look at these books: Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert and Look What We Did with a Leaf by Morteza E. Sohi. I used these during the fall with my preschoolers and Kindergarten classes. They loved to imitate making their own leaf animals and people. Susan at Togethertime4families.com

Yes!! We LOVE Lois Ehlert and use her as our inspiration for our real fall leaf pictures every fall!! Leaf Man, Planting A Rainbow, Eating the Alphabet, and Top Cat are our favorites.

I used to do that activity with my second graders during our Lois Ehlert author study. Love "Leaf Man", and this activity, too! Thanks so much for reminding me about it, and the kit looks great as well.

these are so beautiful! your girls really have an eye for design.

one of my daughter's favorite books is "Baby Honu Saves the Day". it is about a baby dolphin that gets stranded on the beach and what a baby sea turtle does to save her. colorful illistrations and gives the hawaiian name for all the animals. anyway, that is what the dolphin on the sore reminded me of.
