Kid's love boxes...
(or at least mine do!)
Shoe boxes, paper boxes, tissue boxes,
cereal boxes, we find uses for all of them.
Such a fun and open-ended art medium!
We recently expanded our "Barbie Land"
in the guest bedroom.
We recycled some copy paper boxes from
daddy's office to make some new "buildings"
We added:
a Dentist Office,
a Nursery/Day Care Center,
and a Bathroom
to go with our School we built last year.
We printed out dental charts,
a mini dentist license,
and some little posters to decorate our office.
Then, "C" wanted a "baby room"
to take care of our littlest Barbies
so we made a nursery with
printed windows, murals, a birth certificate,
rugs, and mini hand/footprint plates.
The bathroom was fun too,
we made a "tile" floor with some of those
little scrapbook paper squares.
We also brought over my old
Barbie Dream House (yes, I AM a child of the 70s)
and the girls love it.
It even has a McDonalds next door.
They also took over one of my bookshelves
for a Hospital, looks like I need to find one more box!
Happy Playing!
Fondly,
pink and green mama,

This brings back so many memories for me. Barbies were my favorite and I always built my own little houses from whatever I had laying around. Building and decorating were always the best part of playing to me. I always wanted that dream house but it was so fun using my imagination. Fantastic job on all the perfect little details!
Amazing what you were able to create, it looks like a store bought barbie house :) great idea :)
by the way, i love ur blog :) i read it ALL because I just couldnt stop :) hehe
Best wishes to your lovely family
Nikola
Um, can I come play? I, too, have delved into your archives, reading for more time than I care to admit. This is one of my favorite fun places on the web.
i linked to this on my facebook! amazing!
Barbies were my favorite thing to play with. I can't wait until my daughter is big enough for Barbies. I had a whole built in shelf in my closet that was my Barbie house when I was little. I love your craftiness with the office boxes!
You did an amazing job on those! My favourite part of Barbies was always in the getting ready: setting up the world, selecting the outfits, the names... This would have been right up my alley. Thanks for sharing!
I love it! I think I'd like more of the set up than the playing - that was always my favorite part.
This is a really cute idea! We have tons of copy paper boxes!! Looks like when Peanut is older, we will have a great project on our hands! However, she will also be getting my old Barbie house too!! :o)
Awww What an amazing mommy you are! Looks like you both have so much fun together. I want to come over. But I'll have just as much fun browsing your blog!

Wow you have a VERY creative family! I LOVE these! I never had Barbie dolls growing up,(even though I wanted some!) I was too busy playing outside I guess!! I love your Ideas so much! Thanks for sharing!
I ADORE this idea!! I did a much simpler thing as a kid with carpet samples---though I don't even know if they give out big pieces anymore!!
MaryLea, This barbie project brought back wonderful memories of doll houses made with cardboard boxes when I was little. I used to decorate the walls with drawn frames and art cut up from magazines. My younger daughter has a barbie city of shoe boxes but hasn't decorated the walls so this project and your photographs will give us some inspiration. Thanks!!!
We went right to work adding rooms for Little M's pet shop people! Great fun.
Can you please tell me how you created the printables you used for the walls?
I just did Google Image searches to find whatever I was looking for!
Fondly,
MaryLea
I am really wanting to make a homemade barbie house for my daughters too. Where did you get all the furniture? Is is store bought? I've seen other houses with odds and ends (thrift store finds and such) but your little sets seems to match so well! Thanks!
Most of my Barbie furniture is stuff I saved from my own childhood for my daughters. The rest are bits of odds and ends that are mostly store bought over the years.
